A common question
It depends on who you are and what you earn: salary and interest only, capital gains, business or professional income, or a firm, LLP or company. Filing the wrong form can make the return defective.
We pick the form from your income, and for income from 1 April 2026 onwards we file under the Income-tax Act, 2025 and its new forms.

Questions we get asked
Income earned up to 31 March 2026 is reported under the Income-tax Act, 1961. Income from 1 April 2026 onwards falls under the Income-tax Act, 2025, which uses a single 'tax year' and new form numbers.
The Annual Information Statement shows the income and transactions the department has on record for you. Your return should match it, or the difference should be explained.
Under the Income-tax Rules, 2026 the annual information statement (earlier Form 26AS) is Form 168, and the salary TDS certificate (earlier Form 16) is Form 130, from tax year 2026-27. Statements and certificates for the year to 31 March 2026 keep the old numbers.
A belated return can be filed within the time the law allows, usually with a fee and loss of some benefits. An updated return may be possible later, with additional tax.
