A common question

Why do the books and the bank disagree?

Timing is the usual reason: cheques issued but not cleared, deposits in transit, gateway payouts that net off fees. Those are expected and listed.

The differences that matter are the others: receipts nobody recorded, payments without a bill, charges never booked, or the same bill paid twice. A regular reconciliation finds them while they are still easy to fix.

Questions we get asked

Bank Reconciliation: Questions, Answered

What is a bank reconciliation?

Matching every entry on the bank statement to the books, and explaining any difference between the balance in the books and the balance in the bank.

How often should we reconcile?

Monthly at minimum. Businesses with many daily transactions benefit from weekly matching, which keeps the month-end short.

Do you need access to our bank account?

Read-only access or bank feeds into your accounting software are enough. We never need payment rights to reconcile.

Can you clear an old backlog of unreconciled months?

Yes. We reconcile month by month from the last agreed balance, then move to the regular cycle.
